Satkosia Tiger Reserve

Spread over the splendid gorge over the vigorous River Mahanadi in Orissa, Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary Orissa was founded in 1976. The nature lovers can get lots of picturesque beauty at Satkosia. Considered among the best ecosystems in India, Satkosia represents a varied flora and fauna. Later in 2007, the region was declared as the Satkosia Tiger Reserve Orissa, which consists of two adjoining wildlife sanctuaries – the Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Sanctuary. The tiger reserve sprawls over 4 districts – Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh and Boudh. Satkosia Sanctuary in Orissa is visited by a number of people who want to fill lots of thrill in their life.


Satkosia, the name of the area, has originated from two words - sat which means seven and kosk which means two miles, signifying 14 miles (22 km) that is the length of the gorge. The reserve bears an area of 964 sq km, of which 524 sq km is core area. Also being a part of the Mahanadi Elephant Reserve, Satkosia connects of two bio-geographic Indian regions – the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats. This contributes enormous biodiversity in the region and makes it a perfect tourist destination. You have a lot to see and observe in the wildlife sanctuary.
